24th August 1914. The first Radleian to fall in WW1 was Francis Cresswell, C Social, 1897. Captain, 1st Bn, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action at the Battle of Mons. He was a career soldier who served in the Second South African War in 1901-2In 1911 he married Barbara ffolkes. His nephew, George Creswell, was awarded a War Memorial Scholarship in his memory and came to Radley in 1929. George was killed in WW2 and is listed on the WW2 memorial |
