Today we remember …

9th August 1915. Today we remember two Radleians who fell, one in France, the other at Gallipoli.

Basil Constable, E Social 1900. Captain, 1/4th Bn, Royal Sussex Regt. A career soldier, he died of wounds received at Gallipoli. Aged 31.

Gilbert Holcroft, 2nd Lt, 2nd Bn, Durham LI. kia 9 August 1915

Gilbert Holcroft, G Social 1909. 2nd Lt, 2nd Bn, Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action in the Actions of Hooge. ‘He was in his 21st year. He was educated at Radley College and Queens’ College, Cambridge. At the beginning of the war he left Cambridge for Sandhurst. He was a fine oar and rowed in his college boat at Cambridge.’. Aged 20

Today we remember …

11th May 1915. Montagu Clarke, B Social, 1907. Killed in action near Ypres. Aged 21. Monty Clarke left Radley in 1911 to attend Sandhurst. In 1912 he received his Commission in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. It is unusual to find a civilian photo in the War Memorial Albums, particularly for a young career soldier.

Today we remember …

28th March 1915. John Bill, C Social 1895. Captain, 1st Bn, South Wales Borderers. Died of wounds received near Neuve Eglise on 28th March.

He was a career soldier who had served in the Second South African War in 1900, and subsequently with the West African Frontier Force.

Aged 33

Today we remember …

16th December 1914. Hugh Brooksbank, G Social 1907. 2nd Lt, 2nd Bn, Yorkshire Regt. He went to Sandhurst. Died in London of wounds received on 3rd November in the First Battle of Ypres. Aged 21. Twice mentioned in despatches.

Today we remember …

18th October 1914. Harold Barton, C Social, 1907. 2nd Lt, 1st Bn, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He left Radley in 1912 and went to Sandhurst. The Barton Cup is awarded annually to the best cadet in the Removes.He was killed in action in the Battle of La Bassée. His mother received a letter from the German officer who found his body:

‘ Dear Mrs. Barton,-Your son fell on the field of honour against our regiment. I admired his courage after a very hard struggle against us. Your son will be buried near Castle Warneton, near Lille. (Signed) Ewald, Lieutenant Feldart, Regt. No. 7.’
