Battle of the Somme
16th November, 1916. Theodore Ionides. C Social, 1911. 2nd Lt, 2nd Bn, Ox & Bucks LI. Died of wounds received at Beaumont Hamel. Theo Ionides was a member of a Greek family based in London. He first tried to join up when he was 17 but was turned down. The Ox & Bucks Light Infantry did give him a commission when he was 18. He was an extremely popular junior officer who features in surviving letters in the regimental history. He died of wounds, aged 19. |
